Emmanuel Racine was born in Russia in 1910. His family immigrated to France after the Bolshevik revolution. During the German invasion in 1940 he fought with the French army, and after it surrendered, moved with his family to Toulouse, and from there to Marseille where he joined the French resistance. Emmanuel was active in the underground rescue endeavors, forged documents, and worked with foreign counsels. When these activities were no longer possible, he became active in helping people steal the border into Spain and Switzerland.
