Yehuda Maymon, Poland

Yehuda Maimon was born in Cracow in 1924. He joined Akiva, the Zionist youth movement, and participated in Zionist educational work. In August 1942, after the first aktion in which 6,000 Jews of Cracow (among them his father) were sent to the Belzec death camp, he was recruited by the underground movement – Hehalutz Halochem [fighting pioneer]. Maimon was caught, interrogated and tortured in the Montpuliuch prison in Cracow, and was transferred to Auschwitz. On the death march from Auschwitz in January 1945 he met his brother and together with another friend they managed to. (5:13)
