Phela Finkelstein, Poland

Phela Finkelstein was born in Warsaw on June 13, 1921, and joined the Betar Zionist youth movement. After the outbreak of the war and the German occupation Phela joined the movement’s hachasha farm [training farm] in Herbishuv. After she returned to the Warsaw ghetto, she was deported together with her mother to the Treblinka death camp. She joined the Jewish military organization founded by members of her movement, and served as a liaison and messenger. After the outbreak of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, she moved to the Aryan side through the sewage tunnels, but was caught by the Nazis. She managed to survive the Majdanek and Auschwitz death camps and the death march before being liberated by the Red Army. (5:19)
