Rafi Ben-Shalom, Rumania

Rafi Ben-Shalom was born in Cluj, then under Romanian rule, in 1920. He was a member of the Hashomer youth movement. Before the war he lived in Prague where he was active in organizing emigration to Palestine. After the war broke out his activities focused on absorbing the Jewish refugees that came from to Poland from Slovakia. The highlight of his underground activity took place in Hungary during the German takeover (the spring of 1944). He and his colleagues forged papers, prepared hiding places and amassed weapons, continually changing apartments and obtaining weapons. (5:54)
