Jack Strumaza was born in Saloniki, Greece in 1913. In 1943 he was deported together with his family to Auschwitz. His wife and parents were murdered upon arrival in the camp, while his sisters were transferred to the women’s camp, and he and his brothers to the men’s camp. Strumaza played the violin in the Auschwitz orchestra, and about a month later was transferred to work in the Union plant that produced explosives. Thanks to his education and audacity he was taken to work in the technical office, serving as an engineer. When Auschwitz was evacuated he was sent on the death march, arriving at Mauthausen and Gusen in Austria where he was liberated by the US army.
