What Was That Word ‘Shoah’?
“What Was That Word ‘Shoah’? – The Memory of the Holocaust in Israeli Cultural Discourse”, the title of the exhibition comes from Meir Wieseltier’s poem “Words”. The exhibition examines the public discourse of Israeli society toward Holocaust between 1945 and 2005.
The exhibition is focusing on works of theatre, cinema, literature, and the visual arts that deal with the topic. The themes discussed include change of angle of observation – from that of an immigrant-receiving society to that of survivors, change in the attitude toward Holocaust survivors – from judgmentalism to empathy, change in identity – from Israeli to Jewish, intergenerational change – from silence to outspokenness, and from national values to universal meanings.
